Overall Job Purpose:

Leading Canary Wharf based publishing and contract publishing house is looking for a Creative Director/ Head of Design who is brimming with ideas to join its busy contracts art department. The role is for maternity cover and ideally would be full time but we would be open to part time for the right candidate. 

The ideal candidate will have a strong magazine based portfolio and at least 8 years industry experience. We publish a range of existing and new consumer titles and are on the lookout for a talented individual who can slot in and lead the team, meeting the rigorous demands of deadline driven projects without losing the flair or attention to detail that will make them a success in our team and to our clients.

Requirements:

Role and responsibilities:

 

  • proven 8 years industry experience 
  • strong publishing / magazine design experience (contract publishing experience is advantageous)
  • excellent knowledge of Adobe's Creative Suite programs; InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator all essential, working knowledge of Word and Excel
  • strong knowledge and interest of technology trends in digital media / online
  • experience managing a team and workload (you will be heading up a team of three designers, whilst working alongside account directors and the editorial team)
  • excellent design skills goes without saying and able set up templates from scratch
    ability to design for a range of different audiences and understand the markets
  • ability to think commercially is key, think about the wider picture and how design plays into marketing briefs
  • experience directing photoshoots; still life and lifestyle (and adapt when client can be onsite too)
  • experience leading / having worked on large scale pitches previously
  • ability to juggle multiple projects
  • able to hit multiple tight concurrent deadlines with the team
  • must be able to interpret the client / account managers vision (sometimes with a limited brief)
  • be able to translate their own creative vision to team members so in turn they can confidently produce and submit work that is on point
  • to be client facing and be a good reader of people and situations and adapt accordingly
  • have an extremely good eye for detail. Be accountable for everything that goes to print across the whole department

Overall Job Purpose:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented and hard-working individual to join Runwild Media’s editorial team as an Editor. Reporting to the Managing Director, the ideal candidate for this role will have at least five years of experience in magazines, preferably in the luxury lifestyle sector. They will be commercially minded, have the ability to manage a variety of projects at once, arrive with an extensive list of contacts in the luxury industry and will be responsible for the editorial production and future planning of the publication. 

The successful applicant will be expected to take responsibility for the overall management and production of the portfolio of publications produced by Run Wild Group, and to work closely with Senior Management (Production, Design, Finance, Projects) to deliver the overarching aims of the company in an effective and appropriate manner.

Requirements:

  • To have at least five years’ experience working in magazines, ideally in the luxury lifestyle sector
  • To have a substantial portfolio of published written editorial work
  • Proven experience managing the day-to-day requirements of a magazine from start to finish, from forward-planning of features and ideas, writing features and conducting interviews, to flatplan, production and print stages
  • Proven experience with managing an editorial and design team
  • The ability to proof and sub-edit editorial and advertorial pages with acute attention to detail, in preparation for print
  • To ensure the production of the editorial content is prepared for print in a timely, efficient manner
  • To have an excellent understanding of the business model of the publication
  • To have a passion for luxury and journalism

Key Responsibilities:

Editorial

 

  • To write key features and interviews
  • To manage the relevant editorial team in the future planning of editorial content
  • To ensure this team (in-house and freelance) writes to a suitably high standard:
    this means consistently and accurately adhering to house style guidelines and developing to a level that requires very little subbing
  • To edit and review the work of contributors and team members, ensuring that it is
    in line with company policies and ethics and to manage the accurate proofing of articles before being passed to design
  • To be responsible for vital sub-editing and proofing of all pages at an early stage in the design process and to maintain accuracy of information across all publications
  • To ensure that the front cover protocol is adhered to
  • To ensure an interesting and appropriate mix of editorial features that truly reflects the interests and diversity of the relevant readership
  • To ensure that deadlines are effectively met and that the editorial flow folder system is adhered to properly and in a timely manner
  • To take responsibility for the production and sign-off of all advertorials and client-related material.

 

Production & Design

 

  • To manage the monthly flatplans from an editorial perspective in close partnership with the Production Manager
  • To ensure that page designs are in line with the magazine and company brand
  • To ensure final page plan sign-off from both the editorial and advertising teams
  • To assist in the completion of departmental administrative and reporting tasks
  • To work with the designer in present and future design evolution
  • To adhere to departmental working procedures for processing incoming emails, client correspondence and advertising copy
  • To provide final sign-off of all pages of the publication, taking responsibility for
    the accuracy of information provided

 

Management

 

  • To manage the editorial and design process, from receipt through design and timely delivery for final sign-off
  • To liaise with the editorial team to dissemina­te tasks, set deadlines, monitor work and workload and motivate
  • To manage/support the company processes
  • To communicate effectively with internal staff, particularly within the production, sales, accounts and editorial departments, ensuring they are kept fully informed regarding problematic ad copy supply, client requests and other issues that may affect departmental workflows and deadlines
  • To manage the efficient invoicing of all contributors and external parties
  • To ensure that all relevant company spreadsheets and information requests are filled in as required

 

Events, Contacts and Networking

 

  • To develop and manage key public relations contacts
  • To compile and maintain complete and accurate records regarding clients
  • To be responsible for attending events and acting as ambassador of the title and company as a whole
  • To attend appropriate events relevant to the magazine
  • To dedicate time to improving your knowledge of the local area and key local contacts, and ensure these are being continually developed

 

Sales & Commercial

 

  • To attend client meetings where appropriate
  • To be commercially-minded
  • To see and utilise opportunities to meet and influence key marketing contacts, and then introduce them to the commercial department where appropriate
  • To meet regularly with the sales team to share ideas about commercial opportunities

Runwild Media Group is looking for a bright, capable and enthusiastic intern to assist the editorial team for a three-month period on several of our magazines.

 

Our interns are self-motivated individuals with plenty of ideas and a passion for the luxury industry, from travel and beauty to art, interior design, fashion and motoring. Knowledge of the local areas we cover is essential and previous magazine experience would be preferable. Applicants should be University educated. There will be the opportunity to contribute to creative lifestyle features for the magazines and to take ownership of certain pages. You will have the chance to build a good portfolio during your time here, working closely with the Editor and Deputy Editor of the magazines.
